Excerpt from their Summer 2009 Prayer Letter:
Greetings from Princeville, Hawaii. The Wexler family are still in Hawaii....but let us explain. Since the month of February Loraine has battled a cough which became progressively worse. After visiting and being treated unsuccessfully with antibiotics in March, it was declared she had a virus since any cough was very commonplace during the winter and spring months. Still feeling poorly, she began a regimen of supplements, some vegetable juicing and herbs which caused her to feel stronger and better but the cough continued to linger and worsen. Months of sleepless nights finally caused her to visit another clinic and doctor. After a series of tests and two chest x-rays, it was determined she had tuberculosis. It was a surprise to all of us since TB is not an easy disease to contract and one's immune system must be very low. By state law, her doctor was required to notify the Hawaii Department of Health. So as of the end of July, she has been confined to our home for the next two months. Given a choice, Loraine would have preferred doing an alternative treatment for tuberculosis but the law will not allow her to do so. Her refusal to receive the medication (chemotherapy) offered by the State would have resulted in her being placed into a TB hospital isolated from the family or the entire family being ordered by the court to remain confined to the house. So, since August 12 a Department of Health nurse comes Monday through Friday to observe the taking of her medication (at this present time it consists of nine tablets/capsules taken all at once). When the initial two months are over (October 12) she will no longer be contagious but the medication suppled by the State will continue for another four to ten months. She will under doctor supervision during the entire TB treatment. Due to their exporuse to Loraine, the rest of the family underwent tuberculin skin tests. Three of the family had positive skin results but the chests x-ray revealed none of them having active TB. The family are all doing fine and are staying very healthy. Pray for Loraine as she continue the treatments.
The work in Kenya continues to go forward. However, the pastors are experiencing great difficulty at this time. A severe drought has affected many areas of Kenya and there is widespread hunger. Food shortages and prices have increased so the pastors and churches are experiencing great needs. We continue to send our regular support but it seems not enough. We are trying to see what we can do at this end. Please pray for Stephen Francis and Joseph.
We are so thankful for all of you who have in the past and are now faithfully continuing to support us with your giving and or prayers.
