What is a summer missionary?
A summer missionary opportunity is available to those who have a burden for missions and would like to learn more about missionary service. It is open each summer during the years of education. The summer missionary will extend for a period of no more that eight weeks except under special arrangements. All summer missionaries will be approved by the mission in consultation with the field.
Summer missionaries will be under the authority and supervision of the missionaries on the field and/or missionary with whom they are working. Each summer missionary is expected to share in the ministry and help in the day to day work on the field.
Where can a summer missionary go?
Several established IFM fields are open to summer missions programs. Obviously, the best fields are where English is spoken or easily understood. Some of these fields would include: Suriname South America, Zambia Africa, South Africa, Canada, American Indians in Montana, College Campus Ministry in Alaska, Philippines, Marshall Islands, or the Caribbean. There are also some opportunties for those who can speak Spanish to work in Mexico. Application can be made for any of the above fields or IFM will be happy to suggest a field.
Opportunities on each of these fields is limited and application should be made many months in advance. There are limits as to the number of summer missionaries that can be accommodated and not every field is able to take summer missionaries every year.
How Can I Become a Summer Missionary?
Applications are available from the IFM Home Office. The number of summer missionaries going to any field is limited and application should be made as early as possible. We ask that this be no less than three months prior to the projected departure date. In some instances later applications can be considered.
