February 2020

Have you ever read parts of the Bible and wondered if they still mean anything for you today? I confess I’ve read a few genealogies and wonder that! I have also heard others wonder about the books that contain the Law. What can we learn from such a list of commands today?

It is important for us to understand the place of the Law in God’s plan. Paul writes to Timothy, “Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient ... and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine”

(1 Timothy 1:9-10). God recorded the Law to show that our hearts are wicked and point out to us how absolutely impossible it is to meet His standard. As James wrote, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all” (2:10). Even the smallest slip up would mean being guilty before God of the entire Law. Clearly, our hearts are wicked and we could never meet God’s standard of rightness.

Yet, the Law was never intended to change the heart of man. God is not interested in a mere outward observing of rules. While man might strive to obey rules and observe all the outward standards, we can never eliminate the sin in our hearts. But God already had the answer! Christ came, fulfilled the law completely, and met God’s standard of rightness. I’m reminded of Galatians 2:16, “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” The Law points us to Christ, and through faith in him we have life.

What hope for the world! IFM missionaries have been sent to share this message across the globe. Please remember to pray for your missionaries as they share Christ with those that think they can “by their good works” win God’s approval. Let’s all point people to the hope of the Savior.
